President Hans-Georg Walter Hello, neighbors! For the past 19 years, I’ve been looking out from my office across Gutenbergplatz and into the vibrant neighborhood life. Now that the association has come of age, it would be natural to feel a little old, but the changes taking place in this neighborhood—which has been transformed for the better—keep me and my role as chairperson as young as on the very first day.

Vice President Ulrich T. Christenn Hello, neighbors. I’ve been living on the outskirts of Arrenberg for a good twenty years now. A good atmosphere starts with food! This motto motivates me in my work in Arrenberg and also as a local politician for all of Wuppertal. Cooking and eating together is good for the sense of community in the neighborhood. And sustainable eating is an important contribution to global climate protection.

Ever since we moved to the heart of the neighborhood, my dog Prince and I have been on the board of “Aufbruch.” As an authorized signatory and team leader at the Bergische Economic Development Agency, I thrive when finances are in order. During my vacations, I enjoy sailing and love the fresh breeze on my face.

My freelance work as a writer and service provider specializing in words and images is as mysterious as our neighborhood itself. For “The Knowledgeable Arrenberg,” I’m going on a treasure hunt through its past and present, searching for stories and insights that we—whether young or old—need to live together.

Office Fairy Katja Hi neighbors, we know each other from my volunteer work as a food rescuer and, above all, from my two weekdays at the neighborhood office, where I’m here to answer your questions, handle the mail and phone calls, take care of the dust bunnies, the towels, and a whole lot more— but above all, I’m there for the people. It’s a mini-job with a maxi-impact, and sometimes it gets pretty hectic when everyone wants everything right away. I keep my cool, though—and I’m always there for you.

BBEG The official editorial office of the Bergische Bürger-Energie-Genossenschaft. The BBEG is based at Aufbruch am Arrenberg, located at Fröbelstraße 1. It consists of citizens who want to take action to promote a sustainable, renewable, and decentralized energy supply in Wuppertal-Arrenberg and the Bergisches Land region.

Ilka Hi neighbors, I’ve been working with Malte at Arrenbergstatt for a year now with great enthusiasm, though I actually live on the Ölberg (which isn’t all that far away, after all;)). In addition to my work at Arrenberg, I volunteer at the Ölberg-hub and help organize the kunstkiez there. On my days off, you’ll find me in my garden, rain or shine—unless I’m pursuing my other passion: traveling.

Iris Panknin Hello, neighbors! For me, community work in Arrenberg is a long and vibrant story. Despite all the effort involved, it’s not really “work” at all—it’s always a meaningful and invigorating pleasure. Ever since the association was founded, I’ve been combining my passions—like singing, discussing, and celebrating—with getting to know wonderful people from all over the world. Sitting still isn’t an option. Together, we’re making a difference in the world, far beyond our neighborhood!

Malte Steinmetz Hello, neighbors! I’ve been living in Arrenberg since 2013, and I’ve been active in the association ever since. For a long time, I was “just” a volunteer on various projects, but since 2025, I’ve been the full-time manager of the Arrenbergstatt, our open neighborhood workshop.

Norbert Peikert Hello, neighbors. For me, Arrenberg and the KURS21 project office at “Aufbruch” are ideal locations for conducting educational work with students on sustainable development. This collaboration also makes sense for our partners (universities, companies, and research institutions). Within the association, we benefit from shared topics and ongoing dialogue.

Thomas Hertwig My name is Thomas, and at Arrenberg I’m involved in projects where we don’t spend a lot of time talking—we just get to work. A key place for this is the Arrenbergstatt. It’s all about the workshop, the neighborhood, fixing things, experimenting, and helping people help themselves. That’s exactly my style: Not throwing things away too quickly, but working together to see what can still be salvaged. Whether it’s a bike, tools, materials, or a good idea: often all it takes is a place, a few people, and the courage to just get started. Pump my bike, the Radelnde Arrenberg, and Stadtradeln are especially close to my heart. At Pump my bike, we don’t just fix bikes for others—we do it together. Anyone who stops by should learn something, ask questions, give things a try, and, ideally, roll home with a safe bike and a little more self-confidence. For me, Radelnder Arrenberg is about more than just cycling. It’s about a vibrant neighborhood, safe routes, sustainable mobility, and bringing people together—whether it’s with greasy fingers at the Arrenbergstatt, riding together to Critical Mass, or racking up kilometers for “Stadtradeln.” I like practical solutions, clear communication, and projects where you can immediately see that things are moving forward. Especially where “neighborhood” isn’t just a word, but something that really happens: when we’re tinkering, repairing, talking, learning, and working together.
