Bergisch Citizens' Energy Cooperative (BBEG)

Socially Just Energy Solutions for the Region

We all know that climate change is in full swing—in Arrenberg, in Wuppertal, in the Bergisches Land, and around the world. We are all aware of the need to change our mindset immediately. What matters now is consistent action—toward a collaborative, decentralized approach to shaping the local and regional energy future and toward increased and independent use of renewable energy.

Who We Are and What We Want

The Bergische Bürgerenergiegenossenschaft (BBEG) is made up of citizens who want to take action to promote a sustainable, renewable, and decentralized energy supply in Wuppertal-Arrenberg and the Bergisches Land region. Together with others (tenants, property owners, entrepreneurs, tradespeople, church congregations, kindergarten associations, and others), we want to make a joint contribution to climate protection: by building renewable energy facilities and selling green electricity to the region, financing energy efficiency measures, and saving energy through energy consulting (differently, better, less).

Citizen energy cooperatives carry out projects that other market participants cannot implement due to higher profit expectations. With their socially responsible profit margins, citizen energy cooperatives can therefore realize projects that prioritize social or environmental goals.

Get Involved

Every individual investor can contribute to climate protection by consciously directing their capital—for example, into cooperatives.

To participate in the Bergische Bürgerenergiegenossenschaft (BBEG), any citizen or legal entity can subscribe to shares in the BBEG. A maximum of 300 shares may be purchased, but a minimum of five shares, each worth 100 euros, is required. These shares earn annual interest based on a dividend to be determined by the cooperative’s general assembly in accordance with the cooperative’s financial performance. And it’s all done democratically. Each member has only one vote at the general assembly—regardless of the number of shares held.

Get Involved

But we also need dedicated members who are willing to contribute not only their capital but also their time to actively help shape the energy transition through our cooperative in the Bergisches Land region. We’re looking for technicians, administrative staff, people with business, tax, and legal expertise, as well as tech-savvy and marketing-savvy activists. After all, it’s only with people that projects can be implemented and the funds we’ve raised can be invested. People who “roll up their sleeves and get things done” are essential. Are you one of them? Then get in touch with us! You’re welcome here!

The Bergische Bürgerenergiegenossenschaft is participating in the “Energiereicher Arrenberg” working group and is currently planning two solar installations in the neighborhood.
